Are you planning to breed your bearded dragon?
Owning a bearded dragon is easy. You only need to follow the advice of experts. Learning on how to breed is not easy. You need to select a good pair of beardies. A pair of dragons can be selected easily. You must choose a real mature female and a calm male.
Bearded dragons breeding require not only putting a male bearded dragon and female bearded dragon together in one cage. If you want to breed lizards, like bearded dragon, you need to know in more important things in advance. Bearded dragons or beardies have different characteristics that you must take seriously.
• Determine the age of your beardies.
This error is common for some new hobbyist. They are breeding beardies at very young age. The young dragons have greater risk of unstable eggs. The breeding of young dragons may cause health problems. Females that are bred young generally have a shorter lifespan than other. It is best to wait until your beaded dragons are ready. They are ready when they are at least 1.5 years old.
• The Behavior of you dragon must be observed properly
When a male beardy is ready to breed, its beard is darker. He tries to disseminate, you can notice the bobbing behavior and stomping of his feet constantly. You can observe that females are slowly dipping their heads. The men are quite aggressive when mating. Males will normally bite the female’s neck to keep his position.
- Lay Area must be secure
If the Female Dragons start to display mating behavior, it is very important to setup a good laying area for the eggs. If you cannot find a suitable area for her eggs, the eggs will not hatch. The area should be large and filled with moist soil and dry sand. You must secure the laying area from other predators.
• Observe the Eggs
Generally, the eggs will hatch between six to eight weeks, from the laying time. You must remember that the eggs do not hatch their own. You need to observe the eggs and put in an incubator. You have to dig the eggs very carefully and taking care not to turn the eggs upside down.
The females usually lay some infertile eggs in their first clutch. You can check the fertility of eggs by using candle. The infertile eggs are yellow when you light it with a candle. Also, the eggs are soft like gelatin. On the other hand, fertile eggs feel like leather and harder than infertile eggs. The color of fertile eggs is pink in color when you candled it. You can detect a developing embryo inside the eggs.
• Proper Incubation is very important
You should set the right time of the incubator facility. You need to equip the incubator with sand, water and thermostat. The temperature of the incubator should be between 82 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit. You need a lot of moisture to keep the eggs in right condition. The eggs in the incubator will hatch within two months.
